Description
As part of the John D. Solomon Fellowship with New York City Emergency Management, Climate Gentrification NYC explores the intersection of climate resilience investments and urban displacement in at-risk neighborhoods. This project uses GIS and Mapbox to create an interactive web mapping tool that synthesizes climate risk data with socioeconomic factors, illustrating how adaptation efforts—such as floodproofing, green infrastructure, and property elevation—may inadvertently contribute to rising property values and potential displacement in low-income areas.
The interactive map highlights neighborhoods at high risk for climate gentrification, focusing on how infrastructure improvements intended to mitigate climate impacts can shift housing affordability and alter community demographics. Through this tool, users can access detailed insights about specific neighborhoods, including projected climate risks, socioeconomic vulnerability, and recent development patterns. The project was designed to inform NYCEM’s approach to equitable climate adaptation planning, supporting policymakers and advocates in crafting strategies that protect both residents and affordability in high-risk areas. This work has contributed to ongoing discussions around climate equity, providing a valuable resource for community organizations, urban planners, and decision-makers in New York City.
